Mirleft: and a tale of a drenching

We told them we were going out and they looked at us, their eyes disapproving.  It might rain, the ten year old said.  It had rained the night before and the morning had been thick with fog.  But the sky had cleared, and optimistic, we set off in our sneakers, the three of us.  It was an hour's walk down the mountain at a brisk pace.   We made exuberant comments about the few patches of blue sky.

There were random moments of dancing on the way down.

Securedownload (3)We didn't say anything, no we didn't say anything when the sky clouded over, ominous.

Securedownload (2)And then the first drops fell when we were far away, still far away, from the town.  We smiled at each other brightly.  We said it would pass.

It didn't pass and there was no one, no one on the road.  We shivered in our shorts and our summer dresses.  We ran shrieking and laughing down the mountain in the pouring rain. My 12 year old son put his fist in the air and shouted, YOLO.  What's YOLO, I asked?  He replied, You Only Live Once.

We pulled our shawls over our heads.  Suddenly, suddenly we looked just like Berber girls.    Securedownload

Our teeth chattering, our feet covered in red mud, we finally arrived at the bottom of the mountain.  In their four wheel drive, they met us there.  Her hair fluffy, her clothes dry, the ten year old looked at us, embarassed.

Drenched, yes drenched.  But then again, YOLO.

Marrakech: and a tale of night life or where to have a drink in Marrakech

Dear friends,

It's my birthday today.   I'm going to celebrate with friends later this week.  But for now, I thought I'd share a few images from recent evenings in my hometown: at So (sponsored by the darling girls at Madame à Marrakech) and at Bo & Zin.  These are good places to have a drink & listen to music if you're in Marrakech.

Marrakesh: and a tale {maybe} of overexposure

A video blogger, hers is one of those happy, shiny blogs.

1-_MJM3034
A blog filled with funny hats and too big glasses. Her head bobs from side to side.  She smiles and smiles and smiles.  Except for today.  Yes, except for today.

Today she is not happy, today she is not shiny.  There are no sequins, there is no makeup.  She tries to speak matter of factly, as if she is delivering a public service announcement.  But the tears fall in a wake.  Her hands brush them away and away and away again.  She appologizes.  She says it is not like her.  She promises that she is fine really fine.  That tomorrow it will be different -- that it will be back to the usual programming.

But today it is a story of last night.  Late, last night.  Late last night when a stranger followed her.  She walked faster.  He walked faster.  She walked towards a doorway, pretending it was hers.  But it wasn't. And it was too late then.  He was on her.  Touching her, taking her.  Taking all of her.

When she is finished telling us but not really telling us, she looks straight into the camera and tries to smile.  Then she says Please, please don't walk alone at night.  Even if I can help one woman by saying that, it is enough.

And then it was over.

Far away in my Marrakech olive grove I watched this girl on my screen.  And I thought she needed help, real help.  Not comments left on a blog, saying Oh!  saying Terrible!  saying Sorry!   I thought it would be hard for her to get back to her usual programming.

Sometimes the light shines so brightly and there's a moment where it's beautiful somehow.

But then you look again and all you can see are the outlines.....the outlines of your insides.

Overexposed.  Oh, overexposed.

Marrakesh: and a tale of lucky, lucky

Dear friends,

Some fun things are happening here:

* So excited to be giving tips on some favorite Marrakesh places in the November issue of Travel & Leisure Magazine!

  155303_499403950078428_953991496_n

*I was lucky enough to spend the day shopping in Marrakesh with the uber-talented Lily Cooper (also known as Lily Allen).  She bought some gorgeous things including Moroccan carpets, Moroccan lanterns, Moroccan poufs, embroideries, and more.  (I love her album and this song of hers, in particular.)

Lily Allen and Maryam Montague

* It's so fun to have the amazing guitarist of the Dandy Warhols staying with us at Peacock Pavilions (along with his super cool wife, Michelle).  I'm crazy about this provocative song of theirs and their album.

* My Dad, Joel Montague, has donated one of his outsider art collections to the Fowler Museum.  It will be on exhibit from December 2, 2012–March 31, 2013.  If you're in LA, please stop by. I'm so proud of him!
