Marrakech: and tale of a stylish Moroccan dinner party (Oh petals!)

She was French.  The kind of girl who was vegetarian, who loved India, who recycled. She had dreadlocks. She spoke many languages. She had home births.

Oh, you get the picture.

One night there was a dinner at her house in Marrakech.  She lived in a plant nursery (her husband's business) where she had an organic cafe (her business).  She had invited six of us (lucky, lucky).

The dinner was her ode to mother nature.  (Did I mention that her name sounded very close to Aurora?) We were told to dress appropriately; I wore a dress that looked like the sea on a stormy day.

The almost-Aurora-girl had made a beach just for the occasion.  We took off our shoes.  We dug our toes in the sand.

It was evening.  There were candles floating in a basin.

And lanterns in the prettiest colors.

MyMarrakesh2
There were drinks, bien sur.

MyMarrakesh3
And something akin to sheer pleasure...

MyMarrakesh4
Foot baths for each of us among the petals.  Why, in flower pots.

MyMarrakesh5
And raw food canapes. Oh!

MyMarrakesh6
Inside, a small potted jungle awaited.

MyMarrakesh7
The table covered in petals, both printed......

MyMarrakesh8
and real...

MyMarrakesh9
And even delicately carved flowers on our plates, of the edible variety.

MyMarrakesh10
After we had had our fill of blossoms, there was desert.

MyMarrakesh11
Buddha was gazing at us serenely as we left late that night.  I thought I heard him say that in the next lifetime the almost-Aurora girl would come back as the sunset.  But perhaps that was just my imagination....

Marrakech: and a tale of Geraldine's chic Moroccan picnic

Oh they were French.  But of course.  And so the invitation for a Moroccan pique-nique chic made perfect sense.  (The French do that sort of thing -- an ordinary old picnic simply won't do.)

And so it was that we packed ourselves into the car and up up we went to the lake outside of Marrakech.  It was hot, oh very hot, but a cool breeze made it's way through the trees.

And when we arrived....... a sea of Moroccan carpets greeted us, along with a vintage trunk filled to the brim with straw hats.   A hat for each  -- so thoughtful.

We set our baskets down and aimed to stay for a good long while.

Drinks were served from a bar covered with Moroccan tumblers.  Pretty, so pretty.

G1 wine

Soon there were platters of freshly prepared Moroccan good-ness.  We took our earthenware plates.....

and it was heaping after heaping.

G4 food
As for the Moroccan picnic ambiance.........?  Ooh-la-la, Geraldine outdid herself.......!

G6
Did I mention dessert?   Fruit slices and macarons, bien sur.

Followed by lounging

and the climbing of branches.....

One last macaron..........

And all then all the hats went back into the trunk........

On the drive back home we secretly wondered when we might next receive an invitation for a Moroccan pique-nique chic.......Perhaps you'd like to have one?  Please let it be soon..........

Cairo: and a tale of a stylish Rotary Club party

It was a night in Cairo on a rooftop somewhere.

The atmosphere was, well, unworldly

Marrakech: and a tale of wine tasting at Peacock Pavilions B&B

It was in my dining room at Peacock Pavilions.  The wine tasting, the Moroccan wine tasting. All reds.  The bottles huddled covered in a corner, waiting, anonymous.

Wine 6

And then the bottles were spread out, one by one.  And the guests came in.

Wine 1

Wine was poured, each bottle in its turn.

Wine 2

Alex, our star Peacock Pavilions intern was in charge.  His many months on a French vineyard came in handy.  We all learned a thing or two about wine -- how to peer at it, smell it, taste it.  Then we scored each of the wines on specially prepared Peacock Pavilions cards.

We drank and then we drank more.  But there were canapes to make sure that we didn't drink ourselves silly. (Cough)

Wine 3

And then it was time for the big reveal.   Which wines had been scored highest? Which were the best value?

Wine 4
Oh there were surprises!

Wine 5

And in the end all that were left were the wines, revealed of all their secrets.  The one that came in 6th place, looked down right embarrassed.....

PS After 3 months, it's our last day with Star Intern Alex.  Sniff.  We loved having you, Alex, and are so grateful for all your help.  So now I'd like to raise my glass to you.  Best of luck doing whatever it is that lawyers do in London.  You are always welcome at Peacock PavilionsAlways.
